This Month’s Cover: Playground Love (AIR)
Playground Love first appeared on the Virgin Suicides soundtrack and features Gordon Tracks aka Thomas Mars from Phoenix. We have been fans of both Phoenix and Air for so long and have been lucky enough to support both of these legendary bands. It was amazing to watch Air play Playground Love live and as a band they have always inspired us with their exquisite attention to sonic detail. We wanted to put our own spin on this one, as the way Nicolas and Jean-Benoit do it is pretty untouchable. Turn the lights down, sit back and turn this one WAY up.
Feel free to download the mp3 here.
Interview with Logan Browning
Let’s paint the scene. It’s March 2017 and we had just finished our fifth show of the day in a steaming hot Austin, TX @ SXSW. We are mentally and physically exhausted while we load out and hop in the van to get to the next. Along comes Logan Browning, star of the newest hottest Netflix series Dear White People’s press circuit, into our van unexpectedly with the most electric and magnetic positive energy you can possibly imagine. She injected new life into the band. Her fresh creative spirit was a better pick me up than our 16th cold brew of the day. We will never forget that first encounter. On the brink of the premier of the 4th season as trailblazer Samantha White, Logan’s commitment to her craft and activism in real life is forever inspiring us to do better. Logan is committed to making positive change in this world, she is the force and voice that we all need. We are so grateful to welcome the amazing Logan Browning to the RC.

Crying In H Mart
Michelle Zauner
I was gifted this audiobook a few weeks ago and have been listening to it mainly while driving, and I’m not ashamed to admit that it has brought me close to tears on more than one occasion.
Michelle Zauner, who is also the front woman of the band Japanese Breakfast, is a beautiful writer and Crying In H Mart is a wonderful memoir.
Zauner’s complex relationship with her ailing mother and Korean heritage are at the forefront of the book, as well as many detailed descriptions of traditional Korean meals which are written with such warmth and reverence, you can almost taste the food as you’re reading.
The audiobook is read by the author herself which I think adds a little extra depth to the emotional experience of the book.

The Machine Stops : E.M. Forster
I found out about this book from a New York Times article by Oliver Sacks back in 2019. The article captured the feelings that I was having. Feelings of isolation, feeling out of place in a society and culture centered around technology, and the fear of future ecological consequences of the Anthropocene.
Sacks’ recommendation, The Machine Stops is a science fiction short story written in 1909, a world where original thought and first hand experience is discouraged. In Forster’s world, humans have accepted merely existing and despite their increasing decay, their music, amenities and human contact were seen as “good enough.” Forster’s descriptions of communicating through the “machine,” and isolated rooms feel like an eerie prediction of Facetime, Zoom and the pandemic lockdown.
This highly relevant and somewhat prophetic story is a beautiful reminder to take a break from the “machine” (technology) and to experience real connections to other human beings, music, art and the natural world.

Sat in the bay window of an old fisherman's cottage in the far North East of England. Distant wild North Sea waves crashing as the sun sets on 2022 & I raise a glass to Lo Moon while A Modern Life fills the room.
So happy to hear the positive news of LM3 & thrilled to be seeing you with Metric in February...maybe space / time for some headline shows while you're on European soils?!
The very Bestest Wishes to all for 2023.
Barely 100 people attended last nights show in Portland (I guess it’s not much of music city… like Boston is not much of a college town). Simply outstanding, mesmerizing performance by truly passionate people performing and perfecting their craft perfectly. Personally, for me, it will be remembered as my #1 musical experience in Portlandia circa 2021-2022.
Consider me, an Art adorer.😳🕺✨
